The past is what led us to today. It is so important to draw connections to history constantly, for if children are aware of the past, we can hope to create a better future.
History Response
Questions:
1. Why was a book that taught through fear so popular during that time in history?
2. How did the children respond to the books/stories?
3. Why did their lives revolve solely around religion?
4. What was not considered a sin?
Patterns:
The dominating and obvious pattern present in the assigned readings was the severity of religion. Religion was present in both A Token for Children and The History of the Fairchild Family, both in major ways. Another pattern I noticed was early death, which I suppose was normal in that time. It was mentioned several times about children dying really young, especially in the examples in Token. Fear was also another pattern very much present in Token and somewhat present in The Fairchild Family. The examples in Token were more "hell's fire" as the Fairchild Family had more of a protection/discipline feel to it and much less scary.
